Support Markdown-like Formatting in Dynamically Generated Tooltips

Description

The Tooltip feature in Planning Analytics Workspace allows us to dynamically generate tooltip content, for example by using Rules to populate an attribute with contextual information.

Currently, the content is displayed as plain text. Formatting syntax is not interpreted and is displayed literally instead.

Rather than introducing HTML formatting, we suggest supporting a Markdown-like formatting approach, similar to the formatting capabilities already available in the Single Cell Widget.

This would allow dynamically generated tooltips to present information in a more structured and readable way.

Suggested Formatting

We propose supporting the following basic Markdown-like formatting:

• bold for important information or headings

• italic for additional context

• Unordered lists for multiple pieces of information

• code where appropriate

The exact supported syntax could follow the existing approach used by the Single Cell Widget to provide a consistent user experience across PAW widgets.

Example Use Case

A dynamically generated tooltip could contain information such as:

**East Region**
- Revenue: 1.2M
- Growth: +8%
*Last updated: Aug 2026*

Instead of displaying this as unformatted plain text, the tooltip should interpret the supported Markdown-like syntax and render the information accordingly.

This is especially relevant for tooltips that aggregate multiple dynamic attributes, such as region information, KPIs, or status notes, where plain text quickly becomes hard to scan.

Suggested Enhancement

Introduce support for Markdown-like text formatting in dynamically generated tooltips, aligned with the existing formatting approach used by the Single Cell Widget.

This would provide a more consistent formatting experience across PAW widgets and make dynamically generated tooltips significantly more useful for presenting contextual information.

Ideally, this capability should be available consistently in both Planning Analytics Workspace Local and Planning Analytics Workspace SaaS.

Additional Context

We discussed this behavior with IBM Support. IBM confirmed that formatting is currently not supported for dynamically generated tooltip content and suggested creating an enhancement request for this functionality.

The original use case involved HTML-style formatting (e.g. <b>...</b>), which is currently displayed as plain text. We therefore prefer a Markdown-like approach consistent with the existing Single Cell Widget functionality rather than introducing HTML support for tooltips.
