Universal Reports: synchronize axis toggle state across stacked reports

Idea

In Planning Analytics for Excel / PAW websheets, it is common to stack several Universal Reports on one sheet, for example different GL account sets on rows with the same Time set on columns.

Users expect that expanding or collapsing a consolidated time element updates all of those reports together, as if they shared one column axis.

Today, each UR keeps its own runtime toggle state. Clicking +/− on one report changes only that report’s transient state. It does not update the base MDX (TM1Set / hidden parameterized expression) and therefore does not propagate to other URs on the sheet. The reports can consequently show different column layouts.

The current workarounds described by IBM — using the Set Editor on the shared TM1Set, or using a dropdown to swap pre-built MDX into the hidden parameterized area — change the base expression and can align the reports, but they are not equivalent to an in-report toggle and are not practical for typical planning users.

Request

Allow stacked URs that share the same dimension on an axis to share one toggle state, so that expanding or collapsing an element in one report updates the other reports using that shared axis.

The expected behavior for dynamic and static Universal Reports should be considered as part of the implementation.

Why it matters

Stacked P&L and expense reporting packs with a common time axis are a standard reporting pattern and an important use case for Universal Reports as a replacement for stacked Dynamic Reports.

Without synchronized toggle state, multiple URs cannot provide the same interactive user experience as a single shared report layout.

Related

This is related to the existing Idea PAOC-I-1734 – “Sync two or more Universal Reports”, which requests synchronization for reports placed side by side that share the same row dimension.

This Idea addresses the complementary stacked-report scenario, where multiple URs share the same column dimension, such as Time, and their expand/collapse state should be synchronized.

This Idea is related to PAOC-I-1734 – “Sync two or more Universal Reports”, but addresses the complementary stacked-report scenario.

PAOC-I-1734 focuses on reports placed side by side that share the same row dimension. This Idea focuses on stacked reports that share the same column dimension, such as Time.

The underlying requirement is similar: when a user expands or collapses a consolidated element in one Universal Report, the other reports using the same axis should follow.

The Community discussion that led to this Idea also received confirmation from IBM that synchronization of toggle state across reports is currently a known limitation and that a more robust solution is being considered.
