Workspace QMF for z/OS

Created on Oct 8, 2025

The product must encrypt all stored user passwords

When a user creates a batch job from QMF zClient, their credentials are stored in plain text (unencrypted) in the following path within a QMF Server Standalone installation:

/.../Application Data/IBM/QMF Server/sdata/[userID]/user/.storage

Specifically, the credentials are stored in the following variables:

Client/Context/Profile/UserCollections/[ID]/BatchObject/[BATCHID]/REPOSITORY_PASSWORD/Value@String

Client/Context/Profile/UserCollections/[ID]/BatchObject/[BATCHID]/DATABASE_PASSWORD/Value@String

Client/Context/Profile/UserCollections/[ID]/BatchObject/[BATCHID]/DATASOURCE_PASSWORD/Value@String

While access to that path may be restricted to prevent unprivileged users from reaching it, a malicious user with sufficient privileges - or someone who has illegally obtained them - could retrieve the credentials of highly privileged users and impersonate them.

In today’s security landscape, passwords should never be stored in readable text under any circumstances. They must be encrypted.
