Adding support in Q Apply for Db2 data lake target tables and supporting CCD tables in Db2 Data Lake

Data lakes have become an indispensable part of today's database landscape, particularly they avoid vendor lock-in; key concepts here include open data and open table formats.

One challenge in managing data lake tables in a Db2 is detecting changes— identifying updates and deletes.

While Apache Iceberg does offer the capability for time-travel queries, a snapshot of the entire original table is created for every committed operation (Insert, Update, or Delete), yet no per-row information is stored indicating whether the operation was an insert, update, or delete.

That makes it extremely difficult to track changes.

 

In traditional Db2 LUW and Db2 for z/OS, it is possible to replicate data incrementally from one database to another—or within the same database—using Q-Replication technology.

Another option is the use of Consistent-change-data (CCD) tables in Q-Replication.

Consistent-change-data (CCD) tables provide committed transactional data that can be read and used by other applications, for example InfoSphere® DataStage® or the Apply program for SQL replication.

By using a CCD table as your target type, you can also keep a history of source changes.

For example, you can track before and after comparisons of the data, when changes occurred, and which user ID updated the source table.

 

The idea is to use the Q-Replication Apply process to directly replicate changes to Db2 data lake tables
