LDAP user gaining unauthorized access by changing local password (Local then LDAP)

See this idea on ideas.ibm.com

Safer Payments 6.7 has a security risk where any LDAP user can override LDAP authentication when using the Local then LDAP configuration.

The scenario occurs as follows:

  1. An LDAP user is mapped on SP by creating a local account with corresponding ID and OU settings.

  2. The user logs in and change the local password

  3. The user continues to log in using LDAP password

  4. LDAP admins suspend the user (e.g. leaving the company, long-term leave, etc)

  5. The user's login attempt is blocked when LDAP password is used.

  6. The user's login attempt is authorized when local password is user.

Furthermore, in case expiring password policy is set, the user is required to enter a local password of their own choice despite the authentication method being LDAP.

Expected features:

  • Availability of the option to disable password fields for certain roles.

  • Availability of an LDAP/local checkbox on the account configuration page.

  • Segregation of LDAP/local account types.

Additional Notes:

Changing the setting to LDAP only poses high risk as any loss of connectivity to LDAP server leaves Safer Payments admins unable to access the local master account.
