Hi IBM product team
Our servers is expending in terms of capacity per server (from 32 slot per server (on a Sandybridge server) to now 128 per server (on a Milan or Rome server). Taking application MATLAB version 2022b as an example, the total objects and files each calculation process loads during its initialization is 5-6 GB per process, and we are now starting up 128 of such MATLAB processes on a 128 slot server which could potentially slow down everything running on the server. Based on the constraints of this MATLAB application, 1) it requires very quick response time to every task, 2) it needs to load large objects upon initialization.
Using a pre-start service instance is a nice approach to get quicker response from the service instance, at the same time, pre-starting all 128 service instance will block the server when any of the service instance failed to start. If we take the middle ground, by pre-starting less service instances based on a prestartMaxInstancePerServerCapacity=50%, it will greatly help with the pre-start, and help our critical application workaround such problem.
Regards
Andrew Wang
