How can I access Sharepoint files from macOS file open dialogs? (See below for MS-Windows)
There are several ways to access SharePoint from macOS file system dialogs:
To access SharePoint files from macOS file open dialogs, you need to mount SharePoint as a network location. Here's how:
Method 1: Connect to Server (Recommended)
1 Get the WebDAV URL:
• Open your SharePoint library in a web browser
• Click the "Sync" button or go to Library Settings
• The WebDAV URL format is: https://[company].sharepoint.com/sites/[sitename]/[library]
• Or construct it manually from your SharePoint URL
2 Mount in Finder:
• Open Finder
• Press Cmd + K (or Go → Connect to Server)
• Enter the WebDAV URL (must start with https://)
• Click "Connect"
• Enter your Microsoft 365 credentials when prompted
• The SharePoint library will mount as a network drive
3 Access in File Dialogs:
• Once mounted, the SharePoint location appears in file open/save dialogs
• Look under "Locations" or "Network" in the sidebar
• You can now browse and select files directly
Method 2: OneDrive Sync (Easier Alternative)
1 Install OneDrive for macOS
2 Sync SharePoint Library:
• Open SharePoint library in browser
• Click "Sync" button
• Files sync to: ~/Library/CloudStorage/OneDrive-[Company]/[Library]
3 Access in File Dialogs:
• Files appear as local files in your OneDrive folder
• Navigate to them like any local file
Tips
• Persistent Connection: Add mounted SharePoint to "Login Items" in System Preferences to auto-mount on startup
• Favorites: Drag the mounted SharePoint location to Finder sidebar for quick access
• Performance: OneDrive sync is generally faster for frequent access
• Offline Access: OneDrive sync allows offline file access; WebDAV requires internet connection
Troubleshooting
• If WebDAV connection fails, ensure the URL is correct and starts with https://
• Some organizations may block WebDAV; use OneDrive sync instead
• For authentication issues, try clearing keychain credentials and reconnecting
The OneDrive sync method is typically more reliable and provides better integration with macOS file dialogs.
=============================================================================================
To access SharePoint files from Windows file system dialogs (File Explorer, Open/Save dialogs), you have several options:
Method 1: OneDrive Sync (Recommended - Easiest)
1 Sync SharePoint Library:
• Open your SharePoint library in a web browser
• Click the "Sync" button in the toolbar
• OneDrive will open and sync the library
• Files sync to: C:\Users\[YourName]\[Company]\[Library Name]
2 Access in File Dialogs:
• Synced files appear as regular local files
• Navigate to them in any file open/save dialog
• They appear under your user folder or OneDrive section
Method 2: Map as Network Drive
1 Get the WebDAV URL:
• Format: \\[company].sharepoint.com@SSL\sites\[sitename]\[library]
• Or: \\[company].sharepoint.com@SSL\DavWWWRoot\sites\[sitename]\[library]
2 Map the Drive:
• Open File Explorer
• Click "This PC" → "Map network drive" (or right-click "This PC")
• Choose a drive letter (e.g., Z:)
• Enter the WebDAV URL
• Check "Reconnect at sign-in" for persistence
• Check "Connect using different credentials" if needed
• Click "Finish" and enter Microsoft 365 credentials
3 Access in File Dialogs:
• The mapped drive appears as a regular drive (e.g., Z:)
• Available in all file open/save dialogs
• Browse like any local drive
Method 3: Add Network Location
1 Add Location:
• Open File Explorer
• Right-click "This PC" → "Add a network location"
• Click "Next" → "Choose a custom network location"
• Enter SharePoint URL: https://[company].sharepoint.com/sites/[sitename]/[library]
• Give it a name and finish
2 Access:
• Appears under "Network Locations" in File Explorer
• Available in file dialogs under "Network" or "This PC"
Method 4: Direct UNC Path (Quick Access)
1 In File Dialog Address Bar:
• Type: \\[company].sharepoint.com@SSL\DavWWWRoot\sites\[sitename]\[library]
• Press Enter
• Enter credentials if prompted
Troubleshooting
• WebDAV Issues: Enable WebClient service (Services → WebClient → Start)
• Authentication: Use full email as username (user@company.com)
• Registry Fix (if file size limits): Increase FileSizeLimitInBytes in registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters
• Slow Performance: Use OneDrive sync instead of WebDAV
Recommendation: Use OneDrive Sync for best performance and integration with Windows file dialogs.
This would be extremely helpful to implement. We are moving away from on-prem servers to SharePoint and this is holding us back from a complete removal due to SPSS files needing a server to connect to.
