Missing Rollback Feature for WatsonX.ai On-Premise Installation

Problem Statement

The absence of a rollback feature in WatsonX.ai's on-premise installation process poses significant concerns for SMEs and customers. When faced with errors or issues during installation, there is no straightforward method to revert changes without resetting the entire cluster, leading to increased downtime and stress.

Why is this Useful?

  • Enhanced Reliability: A rollback feature empowers users to recover from installation errors swiftly, reducing potential business disruptions.
  • User Confidence: Knowing they can undo changes easily fosters trust in WatsonX.ai's reliability and robustness.
  • Competitive Edge: Offering a reliable rollback mechanism positions WatsonX.ai as a leader in providing trustworthy solutions.

Who Would Benefit?

  1. SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) & Customers: Directly benefit from reduced downtime and stress during installation issues.
  2. Support Team: Reduces the number of support calls related to full re installations, enhancing efficiency.
  3. WatsonX.ai: Gains a competitive edge by showcasing commitment to user trust and system reliability.

Proposed Solution: Leveraging Kubernetes Commands and Scripts

The solution involves utilizing native Kubernetes commands and scripts to enable a rollback mechanism specifically tailored for WatsonX.ai installations. This approach capitalizes on Kubernetes' state-driven nature by allowing users to revert changes more efficiently without resetting the entire cluster, thus minimizing downtime and reducing the costs and hours spent on resolving of installation errors.
In short, this looks like a low-hanging fruit that can be easily achieved and would provide immense value for practitioners and clients alike.

How Should It Work?

  1. Integration with Kubernetes Commands:
    • Utilize existing commands like kubectl rollback (if available) or create custom scripts for specific changes, ensuring compatibility across different Kubernetes versions.
  2. Custom Scripts Development:
    • Develop user-friendly scripts that log and reverse each installation step, enabling a seamless rollback process.
  3. User-Friendly Implementation:
    • Integrate these tools into WatsonX.ai's documentation, providing clear instructions for users to follow during installations.
    • Offer the feature as an option within the On-Premise Control Plane (OCP) console for easy access and use.
  4. Testing & Training:
    • Conduct thorough testing across various environments to ensure reliability.
    • Provide training sessions or detailed documentation on using these new tools effectively.

Conclusion

Implementing a rollback feature through Kubernetes commands and scripts addresses a critical user concern, enhancing the product's reliability and user trust. This improvement not only benefits WatsonX.ai users but also positions the company as an innovator in providing robust solutions.
