Watsonx.ai on-prem monitoring of token & compute usage

At present, WatsonX.ai software does not support automated extraction of Large Language Model (LLM) usage metrics. Although token usage information is accessible, it is often buried within log files or only displayed in the prompt lab window. For the WatsonX.ai Software as a Service (SaaS) offering, monitoring of token and compute usage is available at the project level.

Establishing a clear and accessible usage metric for LLMs is essential for several applications:

  • Cost Distribution: Facilitating the distribution of LLM usage costs across different departments.
  • Usage Monitoring: Enabling ongoing monitoring of overall token and compute consumption over time.
  • Performance Analysis: Identifying potential performance bottlenecks within projects or user groups.
  • Resource Limitation: Implementing limits on token and compute usage for specific users or projects.

Metrics are expected to be accessible through both the WX graphical user interface and the command line, enabling automated extraction as needed. The GUI should offer dynamic reporting capabilities, permitting admin users to generate reports with customizable filter criteria rather than providing only static displays.
