I think I figured out the problem. When I started using Watson Studio there is a sequence of hovering dialogs that take you through the Studio highlights. Only 5 of the 6 showed up (I was using Firefox) and the application got stuck in a translucent and non-interactive state. I loaded Watson Studio Cloud in Chrome and was able to navigated to the 6th introductory pop-up and click "done" after which the application worked proplery.
