Native integration with AWS Lake Formation and Glue Data Catalog (watsonx.data SaaS on AWS)

watsonx.data is being evaluated as a strategic query engine in AWS-based Data Mesh architectures, where governance is managed through AWS Lake Formation and metadata is stored in the Glue Data Catalog.

Currently, watsonx.data does not natively support enforcing Lake Formation security policies when querying tables via the Glue Catalog — a capability natively supported by Amazon Athena.

This limitation has been addressed in open-source Presto distributions through a custom connector that enables:
• Access to Glue Catalog metadata.
• Enforcement of Lake Formation access policies at query time.

The following references describe this approach:
Technical document: Presto and AWS Lake Formation Integration - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fEdENgeY2pzdehQdNDULpRn0p7-0Mklj3twQCuzi15E/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.ionrzyl4mh1h

This is exactly the type of functionality needed by enterprise clients — such as Itaú — to adopt watsonx.data in production, especially in regulated environments where AWS-native governance models must be enforced.

Although this feature is already in the product roadmap, we recommend formalizing the request through this Enhancement Request to ensure proper prioritization based on a real-world use case.

The solution should be implemented natively within watsonx.data, especially for its SaaS version on AWS, but ideally extended to all deployment models to support broader adoption across AWS customers.

Yes, this is a critical capability to ensure enterprise readiness of watsonx.data in AWS environments. Prioritizing this enhancement would significantly improve the adoption potential of watsonx.data among cloud-native enterprise clients.
