Certain target Datastores supported by FlexRep, for example Databricks Delta Lake, do not provide for row-level locking, in particular the ability to have row level locking against the CDC metadata table for the CDC bookmarks.  Whenever, a CDC instance has more than one concurrently active subscription, the target agent receives a resource contention message indicating that concurrent access to the bookmark table is not permitted.   Even though each subscription has its own unique row in the bookmark table, Databricks Delta Lake does not permit multiple updaters to this critical operational table for CDC. 

Objective is to enable multiple subscriptions when FlexRep is targeting targets such as Databricks Delta Lake.   Two alternatives to consider:
 

  • Enable a separate Bookmark table to be created for each subscription, as an option.  Obviously, if one bookmark table works for a target, do so with one.  It could be supported by allowing the administrator to specify a unique schema/authid for each subscription whereby the bookmark table creates the associated <schema>.bookmark_table  table.  
  • Maintain the bookmark table locally where the CDC instance resides.  Obviously this requires additional support in the restart code, because of the benefit of committing the bookmark update together with the target table changes in the same unit of work.
