Change Image Copy To Avoid Opening Db2 Data Sets When Making Conditional Image Copies

Our IBM Image Copy jobs are driving 10s of thousands of Db2 data set opens while doing conditional image copies. During our daily batch cycle the vast majority of the data set opens are not needed as there was no activity for the objects stored in the data sets. In a recent run of one image copy job, it did 16,526 opens but only made 1 image copy for 1 tablespace partition.

We are hitting our DSMAX of 90,000 when the image copies are running. So all the opens done by the image copies are driving 10s of thousands of Db2 data set closes. These closes are in turn driving 10s of thousands future Db2 data set opens.

Our DSMAX cannot be raised significantly due to memory constraints. This is on a 10-Way DSG with approximately 351,000 data sets.
