LISTAGG - Reduce workfile usage of function LISTAGG

The function LISTAGG uses a lot of workfile space.

This can lead to abends, especially if there are many groups.

This is the specific case where the problem occurred in our company:

SELECT A.GES_SL, A.VNR, A.POS_LNR

, SUBSTR(LISTAGG(TA_ID,'/')

WITHIN GROUP(ORDER BY A.TA_ID), 1, 150) TA_ID_LIST

FROM K$DB2FTB.MDTB0001 A

WHERE A.GES_SL = '0501'

AND A.AUSWRTG_SL =1

AND A.BEST_AKT_SL=1

AND A.AUSWRTG_FACHL_DAT = '01.06.2020'

GROUP BY A.GES_SL, A.VNR, A.POS_LNR

There are 11.100.000 rows qualified from the table K$DB2FTB.MDTB0001.

I expect 5.400.000 groups as result. Each list produced by the LISTAGG-function should be shorter than 150 bytes.

The execution of the SQL-Statement abends with reason-Code 00C90305.

This means that the limit on the space usage of the work file storage by an agent was exceeded. This is controlled by the ZPAMR MAXTEMPS.

The value for MAXTEMPS in our system is 50.000 MB.

This shows that the LISTAGG uses huge amounts workfile space, even if the lists are small.

    Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS enhancement request.

    After giving the request a comprehensive review, we have determined that we cannot include it as a candidate in an upcoming product deliverable because the request has a high implementation cost. Consequently, we will not be implementing this request.

    We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. We also hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.
