Dear Eva, Thank you for submitting this Aha! Idea. Our development team has reviewed it and has provided the following feedback.
ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN is an immediate alter and therefore nothing is stored in SYSPENDINGDDL. If anyone wants these immediate alters to be pending, then a zparm exists for that purpose and it would show up in this catalog table. There are no plans for another catalog table for immediate ALTERs.
Even though adding or altering a column is an immediate change, the physical materialisation of that change can occur later through UPDATE or REORG. Db2's general strategy is to indicate this through the use of AREO*, however further work is required to achieve consistency in that area.
Therefore, we will not be considering this Aha! Idea, but we would like to ask that you continue to submit ideas to us as your input is important to us and we consider each and every enhancement request.
Sincerely,
The Db2 for z/OS Development team
