Enhancement to JSON2BSON UDF

With the increasing adoption of Db2 REST, the use of JSON2BSON UDF also increased. The problem with this UDF is that frequent repetitive calls of this UDF will result in -904 "ROUTINE PARAMETER STORAGE" error. We have gone thru recommendations in https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/db2-for-zos/12?topic=functions-tuning-routines-storage-consuming-parameter-lists

Even with isolating this UDF to a separate WLM AE or a periodic WLM AE REFRESH, the calls to JSON2BSON UDF will only keep increasing to a point where the storage is exhausted and hit -904 error again. Once it hit this error, subsequent calls will fail until a WLM AE REFRESH is done.


This UDF needs to be improved/reworked. Just sharing one of our developer's opinion on this:

"We could potentially ask IBM to provide a lighter version of JSON2BSON with say just 1MB or 2MB output. So that way the probability of running into storage issue can be drastically reduced. They can call it JSON2BSON_1M, JSON2BSON_2M so we know what to use. In most of the cases, this is sufficient.


But even with the above change, pure JSON_TABLE parsing capability is nowhere comparable to XMLTABLE featureset. It provides very limited parsing options, which in turn forces us to use JSON2BSON more extensively. "
