Process PBG same as non-UTS Segmented When Using LISTDEF

When using LISTDEF with “PARTLEVEL 0”, partitioned by growth tablespaces which were converted from non-partitioned segmented tablespaces are no longer being considered as part of the result set. In order to maintain the same result list I would like to see a new function/feature added such as “PARTLEVEL 0 INCLUDE PBG” which would allow tablespaces converted from non-UTS non-partitioned to PBG, to still be backed up in the same manner it used to be. Along with this, when specifying a specific partition or range of partitions, I would like the ability to exclude PBG tablespaces (i.e. PARTLEVEL 1:5 EXCLUDE PBG). It would also be useful to add a system parameter to be able to control the default behavior at the subsystem level if a customer chooses.

I think this new feature would be very beneficial to customers, so they don't have to go and change any utilities already using LISTDEF with "PARTLEVEL 0" as they convert to UTS. The utilities that I feel which would benefit the most are COPY and QUIESCE when using LISTDEF with “PARTLEVEL 0”. Since data can change partitions based on the size of each dataset, I would want to make sure that all my PBG partitions are backed up and quiesced as if it was one partition.

Needed By Not sure -- Just thought it was cool

Dear Matthew, Thank you for submitting this requirement. The Db2 for z/OS team reviewed it and provided the following feedback:

PBG is by definition a partitioned tablespace and is therefore subject to the LISTDEF behavior associated with partitioned tablespaces. There are no plans to make PBGs operate like classic simple or segmented tablespaces do/did.

If there is a specific usability issue related to the use of PBGs then a new requirement should be entered that explains what the issue is and that will be evaluated separately, but our plan is not to treat UTS tablespaces as non-partitioned.

Therefore, we will not be implementing this idea.

Please do continue to submit your enhancement ideas to us as we review each one for its potential as a candidate for inclusion in our product.

    Sincerely,

    The Db2 for z/OS Team
