Db2 zOS: Provide support for period-clause FOR PORTION OF BUSINESS_TIME for update operation within MERGE statement

Idea is to extend functionality of MERGE statement in Db2 z/OS by providing support for the period clause FOR PORTION OF BUSINESS_TIME for an update operation (and delete operation) within the MERGE statement.

The statement would look like this:

MERGE INTO table-name ... WHEN MATCHED/NOT MATCHED ... THEN UPDATE table-name FOR PORTION OF BUSINESS_TIME ... SET ...

According to the Db2 z/OS documentation this support for the period-clause for update operation within MERGE is missing. IBM support confirmed in case TS011897387, that this functionality is not yet supported in Db2 z/OS.

Additional information: Db2 z/OS supports already the period clause in single UPDATE statement. DB2 LUW already supports the period clause for update operation within a MERGE statement.

Benefit of this extended support of period clause within MERGE would be: 1. Extend the use of application-period temporal tables. 2. Provide the ability for database independency of application programs. Without the mentioned support application programs using the period-clause within MERGE cannot be converted from usage of a Db2 LUW database to usage of a Db2 z/OS database without changing the SQL code within the programs.

    Dear Frank,

    Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS enhancement request. We have reviewed this request and believe it is a good candidate for the Db2 for z/OS product.

    However, it does not align within functionality prioritized for delivery within the next 12 months. Therefore, unfortunately, we will not be considering this idea at this time.

    It will remain in our backlog and may be revisited at a future time.
