IBM Data and AI Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data & AI organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Workspace Db2 for z/OS

proactive messages of objects ??% full or 'follow-up objects free space' function inside Db2

Follow up TS and XS limits in Db2 z/OS is not an easy job.

The last 6 months, we coped issues with partitioned indexes full. This were partitioned bases 'temporarily session' tables for applications, whereby the not active partition is cleaned up every day. Also the amount of space used in this tables is volatile (depending on the workload from fe mobile apps) and does not follow a normal growth pattern of fe. 20% year, as 'normal' data does.

The impact -if these objects are full- is high:  no new sessions are allowed (so outage for the applications) and it is difficult to free them, knowing they are used by almost all applications on our MF (massive locked).

There are fysical limits, but also logical limits within Db2, depending on type of objects and parameters within Db2 and z/OS.

Knowing there are a lot of types of TS with a lot of parms (pgsize, maxpartions, dssize, large, pri qty, sec qty) with can lead to other 'logical' limits of vsam datasets. Same for indexes.

Since RTS exists, we have more live counters for following space consumption of these objects. But the prediction or the proactive alert when an object becomes full, is not easy and not 100% conclusive to write on our own.

Can we expect from a mature database system:

- To proactivaly alert us that an object is running low in space ?

- We can call a 'space' function for an object and giving us the amount of space left ?

Is it an option to foresee/build this inside Db2 ?

I think many customers will profit with this new functions and surely will lead to less unavailability of objects within Db2...

Thanks in advance,

Jeroen.
