Extend Db2 Message monitoring IFCID 197 to include information about message tokens

Our shop is using ITM Situation management to heavily automate processing/notification for our customers and thus minimize the use of custom logic to be maintained (specific REXX programs etc.) .

One feature that we leverage is the OMEGAMON for Db2 Messages monitoring that uses IFCID 197. The problem with IFCID 197 is that it sees the message text as a “monolithic entity” and does not cater for the message token contents to be monitored. This causes the feature to be only of limited value, as the message token parsing would have to be done using customer logic (REXX for example).

For example: We want to react to specific Stored Procedures that abend – so the following message can be used for this: DSNX906I csect-name PROCEDURE OR FUNCTION name TERMINATED ABNORMALLY. THE PROCEDURE HAS BEEN STOPPED. ASID= asid WLM_ENV= wlmenv.

Due to the limitation mentioned above, custom logic needs to be implemented to parse this message to fiddle out the SPROC name and WLMENV name.

What would be beneficial is to expose the message tokens in IFCID 197 (for example using a new variable length repeating data section) so that the monitor can pick them up accordingly to be exposed to customers in the ITM Situation management.

Dear Anja, Thank you for submitting this enhancement request. Our Db2 for z/OS development team reviewed it and agree this is a good idea. They see the use case to print out the message token in separate areas in the ifcid 197. Unfortunately, this is not an item they can work on in the upcoming 12 months, so for now we are marking this as Not under consideration, but we do plan to revisit it again in the future.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. And we hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Team
