Change Isolation Level to UR on Read-Only DBs / Tablespaces / Partitions

Databases, Tablespaces, and Partitions can be started in Db2 in read-only (RO) mode. This allows user transactions to access data in these objects only for read (SELECT). Therefore no modification to this data can be made. However, when accessing data on these objects, locks are taken (e.g. when the query is defined with RR). This may lead to Deadlocks or timeouts when the user transaction modifies other data subsequently or before. It would be better when the transaction would take no lock on these RO objects (implicit change of the isolation level to UR on RO objects).

This would also be useful when accessing data through views, which e.g. are referencing multiple tables, some RO and some RW. The standard isolation level could be for example RR which makes sense for the RW tables but on RO tables no locks have to be claimed. This avoids deadlocks and timeouts of other queries as well as termination of online utilities.

    Dear Florian,

Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS Idea. After giving the request a comprehensive review, we have determined that we cannot include it as a candidate in an upcoming deliverable because it is not consistent with the product architecture and our strategy for future deliverables. Consequently, we will not be implementing this Idea.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. We also hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Team
