Enhance DSN1COMP to provide more information on LOB's

There is a need to have a greater handle on LOB columns with regard to their size and storage. At the moment the only way to analyse the lengths of the LOBs is through using expensive SQL with BIF LENGTH and SUBSTR. It really only possible to do small sampling.

The size of a LOB is important in the configuring of its storage, especially to determine the sweet spot for INLINE LENGTH.

What I have found is that the DSN1COMP utility for compression evaluation does some good work in reporting on the LOBs when there is a Zedc card enabled. Considering this utility already scans the data, I figured that it wouldn't take much to add an enhancement to this report by supplying more details about the LOBs.

Information I would like to see include:

  1. The Median of the average row length. (Average can be skewed)

  2. A count of ranges of lengths. ie How many LOBS are between 1 and 2000 bytes, 4K-32K etc

  3. What if I had an INLINE LENGTH of x bytes and compression. How much space would I save?

In the additional details I have provided an example of the existing report.

There is a real lack of support for LOB information through statistics and other means. DSN1COMP has shown really good potential and would love to see it go a bit further to assist with best practice management.
