IBM Data Platform Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data Platform organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas

Post ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted and upvote them if they matter to you,

  1. Post an idea

  2. Upvote ideas that matter most to you

SQL function LAG (and other passthrough OLAP functions) – implement natively Db2 Z !

Db2 Z provides some OLAP functions that are only available as passthrough functions that are only available via an “accelerator”

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/db2-for-zos/13.0.0?topic=expressions-olap-specifications

This list of OLAP functions that are only available via an “accelerator” include LAG and LEAD and others.

  • Not everyone has an accelerator.  As a result, they cannot use these fancy OLAP functions!

I would like IBM to enhance Db2 Z and make these functions natively available in Db2 Z.

Start with LAG.

Basically, I have recently realized how useful is a function such as LAG.

> Fancy OLAP functions like LAG let end-users write simple SQL and retrieve interesting result sets (which allow us to quickly look at the result and make decisions)

And yes, I understand that there are manual or fancy SQL methods to implement equivalent to LAG without the actual LAG function.  But this requires expertise in SQL.   It is non-trivial.

Beyond doing LAG the hard way with complex SQL, end-users might be tempted to move the data to EXCEL or another database engine or do it in a programming language.

If LAG was available, then it would encourage my end-users to use advanced and useful OLAP functions.  It might make Db2 Z easier to use for those end-users.

OLAP functions such as LAG are natively available in SQLServer, ORACLE and DB2 LUW.  Db2 Z should have equivalent SQL functionality as these other relational database technologies!!!    Db2 Z should keep up with the competition!
