Workspace Db2 for z/OS

Provide a threshold for the number of incidents caused by a single holder for message DSNT376I.

Availability and stable systems are very important to us (as they are for most users of DB2 for Z). Recently, I implemented a process that automatically terminated any process that shows up as the holder for a specific number (threshold) of DSNT376I messages (my own threshold is 12 which serves us very well). But, in thinking about this, it takes quite a bit of effort to put together a process like this. And, I can share the benefit of this process by having the logic baked into DB2. So, I would like to have a new Zparm that specifies the maximum count of DSNT376I messages for a given holding thread and when one thread exceeds that threshold, that thread is cancelled (with a proper console message). Doing this would actually reduce the number of console messages (not to mention to help with stability) because when one holder causes many threads to timeout, we get many console messages for that event and we have many users that perceive that Db2 is actually down. Having this option would prevent many failures (at least putting this in with all the work it took me to do it is providing this for us).

Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS Idea.

After giving the request a comprehensive review, we have determined that we cannot include it as a candidate in an upcoming deliverable because it is not consistent with the product architecture and our strategy for future deliverables.

There are no plans to provide this ability in Db2. Choosing a threshold for the number of lock timeouts caused would be arbitrarily workload-dependent and could result in even well-behaved applications being penalised. Although we understand that nobody wishes to see the console flooded with messages, we believe that there are other methods to control runaway or otherwise misbehaving applications.

As a consequence, we will not be implementing this Idea.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. We also hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Development Team
