Temporal Join Capabilities

The table reference syntax for temporal joins needs to be expanded to include effective ways to find rows across the tables that share time affectivity.
The FOR BUSINESS_TIME / FOR SYSTEM_TIME syntax does not allow for references to columns from the tables in the query or SQL expressions. Instead, temporal syntax must be abandoned and the SQL needs to use regular predicates (the same ones generated by the temporal syntax) to make sure unrelated rows are not returned as part of a join. (Ex. A.BT_BEGIN < B.BT_END AND A.BT_END > B.BT_BEGIN).
Coding the same FOR BUSINESS_TIME FROM / TO on multiple tables does not provide preclude rows that are not effective in the same time period from being joined. A column reference should be able to do this.

Thank you for submitting this enhancement request. While we view all the enhancement requests we receive as valuable and we would like to implement all of them, in an effort to have maximum transparency we are closing the ones that don’t currently appear on our two year product roadmap. This is not to say that these enhancements may not still be implemented at some point in the future as we do evaluate our requirements on the basis of customer demand and technical impact, to deliver maximum value to our customers.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team.  And we hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    The Db2 for z/OS Team
