Dear Robert, Thank you for submitting this Aha! Idea. The Db2 for z/OS development team reviewed it and determined the following:
By the time this sort space allocation error occurs it is too late to revisit the SORTNPSI decision.
REORG would need to redrive all initializations and taskset calculations, restarting the utility from scratch, and there is no process for doing so.
If sortwork space is fragmented then there would be no guarantee that redriving the utility would work.
At this point there are no plans to implement this requirement and so this is being marked as not under consideration. As an aside, in are considering to provide complete oversight over utility executions so that it would be possible to better examine utility failures and then take action to prevent them, such as ensuring that sufficient sort space is available or scheduling utilities so they compete less for available space.
Please let us know if you have any further comments or questions.
Sincerely,
The Db2 for z/OS Development Team
