IBM Data and AI Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data & AI organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Allow REORG TABLESPACE DROP_PART on PBG UTS with a DATA CAPTURE CHANGES table

We have a near 24x7x365 application with IBM InfoSphere Data Replication (IIDR) Multi-Uni Queue Replication configured between two Db2 subsystems. A Multi-Uni configuration is an IBM solution for bi-directional replication that is configured with two uni-directional queue subscriptions. All of the table spaces are Universal Table Space (UTS). We have a few Partition By Growth (PBG) UTS that grew additional partitions due to unexpected data growth and lack of a purge process. Once the purge process was implemented, all of the data fits in the first partition. REORG TABLESPACE cannot drop the empty partitions when the table is defined with DATA CAPTURE CHANGES. The near 24x7x365 uptime of the application makes it risky to alter the table to DATA CAPTURE NONE, REORG the table space with DROP_PART YES, then alter the table back to DATA CAPTURE CHANGES, due to the possibility of the target table getting out of sync with the source table. Due to the amount of data in the table and the high level of OLTP activity on the table, it is impractical trigger a full reload of the target table. At this time, the only option is to schedule an application outage on the source table, alter it to deactivate replication, reorg the table space and alter it to allow replication again. The proposal is to enhance Db2 z/OS, IIDR and REORG TABLESPACE to allow REORG to drop empty partitions on a PBG UTS that has a table defined with DATA CAPTURE CHANGES.

Dear Stephen, Thank you for submitting this Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS enhancement request. After careful review and consideration, development has provided their feedback as follows:

While we understand the customer impact by this restriction, the solution involves a complex design change between IFCID, Replication and utility processing, and it is declined on the main reason that development cannot contain this effort within a reasonable time frame due to other committed work in the current roadmap.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS development team. And we hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

The Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS team
