Use values in a field on one object as selection values ("dropdown" values) in a field on another object

When we record errors we need to capture the Stock name and Ticker/ID, Security Type, Portfolio in which the error occurred, impacted Portfolio Managers, the person who identified the error (not necessarily a GRC User), the person/people who were responsible for the error/control breakdown, etc. We have the Employee object and a custom object created by IBM that contains two record types with different fields - Security and Portfolio. The list of Securities is ever growing and too large to maintain a dropdown list. Same for Employee. We need to be able to select values from a field on another object. We could associate an Employee record to the error, but that doesn't tell you if that associated Employee was the person who found or caused the error. And we can't easily filter on errors affecting specific securities or portfolios if we just associate it as a child of the error.
