Dashboard filter bar should allow single select or multi select, optional or mandatory

The filters available in the All Tabs / This Tabs area of dashboards are multi-select only.

We often have dimensions, that if a user filters on multiple values, will produce an invalid result. Some examples include currency - if you select multiple currencies you will be adding different currencies together, or forecast.

Whilst we can educate users to use the existing multi-select functionality, and only select a single value, this is error prone. It requires the user deselecting the current choice, then selecting their new choice.

The dashboard author should be able to say if a filter in the filter bar is a multi or single select.

Multii or single selecting filtering must be important. It's available in reporting. It's even in dashboards own Drop down list visualisation giving the author the property of 'Selection' to say if it is multi or single select.

Additionally, a filter should either be optional or mandatory. Sometimes a dimension must have a filter in order to show meaningful data - again take the example of currency. The dashboard author should be abe to state if a filter is optional or mandatory.

This functionality would:

  1. Prevent users getting incorrect results from dashboards

  2. Provide a quicker way for users to filter on a single value

  3. Remove the need for users to read documentation on how to use a dashboard.

The existing dashboard Drop down list visualisation is not a suitable as it cannot filter All Tabs.
