Merged idea
This idea has been merged into another idea. To comment or vote on this idea, please visit DB24LUW-I-461 increase DB2 sector size used to write to disks from 512 to 4096.

'db2 "ALTER TABLESPACE DATA1_TS no file system caching" on ECKD DASD Merged

We are trying to 'db2 "ALTER TABLESPACE DATA1_TS no file system caching"' on DB2 LUW 10.5 on RHEL 6.5 on z/VM 6.3 using ECKD DASD for the DB2 data store. When issuing the above command we get:

SQL1723N The CREATE TABLESPACE statement or ALTER TABLESPACE statement failed because a file system caching option was specified that is not supported in the current environment of ECKD disk (DASD).

Consequently, DB2 is not using direct i/o and is buffering and managing the data in addition to Linux doing so, too. This causes inefficiencies and additional demands on our resources and impacts performance. Since we are running in a highly-virtualized environment (z/VM on System z), this will not scale well. We need the capability for DB2 to do direct i/o on ECKD DASD as is done in the SCSI environment.

This is a limitation of ECKD DASD, which requires 4K sector support for Direct I/O.
This limitation will be lifted when 4K sector support is complete.
I'm marking this as a duplicate of DB24LUW-I-461.
