ALTER TABLE DROP multiple COLUMNs

If you want do delete multiple columns of a table using "ALTER TABLE tbname DROP COLUMN colname", you currently have to execute many ALTER TABLE statements. The execution time increases exponentially with the number of columns to be deleted. If there are many RUNSTATS values and many columns to be deleted, this can cost up to several CPU minutes.

Allow multiple DROP COLUMN clauses to be specified an an ALTER TABLE statement. Then the CPU requirement only increases linearly and not exponentially for each column to be deleted.

A workaround currently is to delete all RUNSTATS values, or run REORG multiple times. Neither of these doesn't look good.

A case with IBM was open. Closed on "works as designed" :(

    Dear Dietrich,

    Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS enhancement request. We have reviewed this request and believe it is a good candidate for the Db2 for z/OS product. However, it does not align within functionality prioritized for delivery within the next 12 months. Therefore, unfortunately, we will not be considering this idea at this time.

    We do plan to revisit this idea in the near future.

    We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. We hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.
