DB2 Z/OS Sync Logical and Physical Parts after full Reorg

ADD PART was used to insert a new physical partition in the middle of a tablespace. Now the Logical and Physical partitions are mismatch.


If a Full Reorg on the full tablespace is performed, the utility can include an option to resync the logical and physical parts.


Real Life Example: A Reorg with DISCARD on a PBR tablespace is needed. The limitkey is a Timestamp. SQL was used to determine what partitions need to be Reorgd, giving the MAX(PARTITION)

WHERE LIMITKEY <= CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 7 years


If ADD PARTITION is used to INSERT a new partition in the middle of the current range, the MAX(PARTITION) is listing the new, higher PHYSICAL partition. The automated SQL is choosing too many partitions.


If Logical Part = Physical Part:

REORG TABLESPACE dbname.tsname PART (1:100)

If not equal, will need:

REORG TABLESPACE dbname.tsname PART (1:99, 300)

    Thank you for submitting this Idea to the Db2 for z/OS team. We have evaluated it and determined there are no plans to have the REORG utility resync logical and physical partitions. What we will consider in the future, however, is the ability to specify logical partitions instead of physical partitions to address increasing complexity and mismatch between the two.

    We will revisit this idea at a later date.
