Purpose is usually very simple planning or easy implementation of data from an additional source. Workaround is file export, external processing & import as uploaded file (last even without a native scheduling). Transferring existing business logic from reports to data modules is often too complicated or too much effort for business users.

If I am understanding this correctly, the 'ask/request' is to make Cognos Reports be made available as a source to be used within Data Module and bypass the DataSet option (which is a great solution). Obviously, if the report has Prompts, then the DataModule UI would need to have some mechanism to deal with it.
The other option would be to build the DataSet functionality to be part of the above (i.e. bake it into the DataModule UI)
If I didn't misunderstand this request and it is what I stated above, I think this would be a GREAT idea.
Your description isn't clear to me but this sounds like a data set, no?
