Our DB2 systems use multi-part (qualifier) aliases for various datasets that are normally sub-system specific.
e.g. the BSDS and active log datasets for a DB2 system follow the format
DSN.<ssid>.BSDS01
DSN.<ssid>.LOGCOPY1.*
where DSN.<ssid> is a multi-part alias
This allows us to perform DB2 system restores from Flash Copies, as the ICF User Catalogs for the aliases are held on the same disks where the DB2 datasets being restored reside. This is a requirement for the DB2 RESTORE SYSTEM utility to work.
The DB2 Archive logs use a different alias as they are not recovered by RESORE SYSTEM.
DB2 v12 introduced a variable VBSDSLOG that can be used to specify the alias to be used for BSDS datasets in the DSNTINST CLIST.
However panel DSNTIPA4 in CLIST DSNTINST does not support multi-part aliases, being limited to a single string of up to 8 characters.
We currently have to post-process the output of the DSNTINST CLIST to edit the generated jobs to work properly.

The Db2 for z/OS development team researched this idea further and will not be implenting this idea.
They have determined that the VBSDSLOG is the alias of the ICF catalog for the BSDS and active log data sets. The multi-part alias name, e.g. DSN.<ssid>.BSDS01, DSN.<ssid>.LOGCOPY1.*, can be specified on panel DSNTIPH, under the sections Bootstrap Data Sets (BSDS) and Active Logs respectively.
We hope you find this information addresses your request.
Sincerely,
The Db2 for z/OS Development team
