Allow BIND EXPLAIN(ONLY) use virtual indexes

It would be very helpful if Db2 allowed (optionally) to use virtual indexes when BIND with EXPLAIN(ONLY) is performed. This can be an additional BIND parameter on whether or not use virtual indexes. This option will eliminate/reduce a need in third party tools for evaluating "what if" scenarios in the situations when bulk explains are needed.

Hello Edward, After a second review by Db2 for z/OS Development, they have stated the original requirement is about 'WHAT IF' index. The new requirement is about 'WHAT IF NOT' index, which is a different feature. IBM catalog table such as SYSPACKDEP can be used to identify impacted packages. It sounds like the submitter is looking for better tools support instead of additional Db2 feature.

Please let me know if anything further. Thank you Edward

Hello Edward, I've asked our SME to re-evaluate this Aha! Idea and will keep you posted. Thank you.

Can you please re-evaluate this idea? This would be very beneficial when trying to evaluate if an index was dropped. Most tools are not very good at finding all SQL statements dependent upon an index, displaying the current and new access path in a readable format, then listing any performance metrics for those statements.

Thank you for your response. Db2 development has reviewed it but unfortunately, determined this idea will not be implemented.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team.  We also hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Team

This is mainly needed to evaluate the new/alter index impact before the index change is actually made. Individual explains don't even cover package level scope and the customers need DS group scope - overall perceived performance benefit of the change.

Thank you for submitting this Aha Idea.

To properly evaluate this request, Db2 development would like to understand why the approach of using a stand-alone explain is not sufficient for tooling solutions to exploit virtual indexes. There are other tools that extract the SQL from packages and issue standalone explains. And many customers prefer not to use BIND EXPLAIN(ONLY) because it has the same locking implications as a traditional BIND. Also, given that an accurate representation of statistics would be required for the optimizer to effectively compete a virtual index - and RUNSTATS does not collect statistics on a virtual index, it would be valuable to understand how accurate are the statistics that are represented by tools with a virtual index. The reason for these observations is to ensure that a further investment by Db2 in virtual indexes will result in a successful evaluation by the customer.

    Thank you.
