Shrlevel change image copies that are older than the available Db2 logs can not reliable be used for recovery because there may have been inflight URs at the time of the copy that got backed out after the copy finished. To recover to current, Db2 reads the logs looking for the inflight URs that were backed out so that these URs can be removed from the copy. If the logs are not available, the recovery will not be successful.
Sometimes when a shrlevel change image copy is being made the object being copied has no entries in SYSLGRNX during the time duration of the copy. In this scenario, it would be desirable for the image copy be recorded as a shrlevel reference image copy. This would allow the copy to be used for recovery in all scenarios regardless of whether Db2 logs are available or not.

Dear Stephen, Thank you for submitting this Aha! Idea. The Db2 Utilities development team reviewed it and provided the following feedback:
A RECOVER to current will always pull in logs for log apply as long as there is any SYSLGRNX range following the image copy, regardless of whether the image copy is SHRLEVEL REFERENCE or not. Moreover, RECOVER TOCOPY to a copy that is marked SHRLEVEL CHANGE will succeed and will not attempt to apply any log records.
Therefore we do not see this idea as being of benefit to the recovery process itself. It may be helpful when moving datasets, such as using DSN1COPY, to know that the copy is consistent in itself, but there are no plans to extend COPY utility processing costs to deliver this type of functionality at this time.
Please do continue to submit Aha! Ideas for our review and consideration to implement in the Db2 for z/OS product.
Sincerely,
The Db2 for z/OS Team
