Workspace Db2 for z/OS

Increase messaging detail after STOP Db2 to provide shutdown status information.

As Db2 continues to allow more and more capacity in a single subsystem - larger bufferpools, more open datasets, etc - the time to shut down Db2 continues to increase.

Operational staff has complained repeatedly that they cannot tell whether Db2 is actively in the process of shutting down, or simply "hung", due to a lack of messaging detailing the long-running shutdown processes.

What we would like to see is more status-messaging during Db2 shutdown processing, indicating the current status of the subsystem shutdown and of some of the long-running operations in a large-scale Db2 subsystem, such as:

  • Number of datasets still needing to be closed, and how many parallel dataset-close processes are running

  • Status of data externalization/writes from bufferpools, and messages for local pools similar to those given for group bufferpools when they are disconnected

  • Status of any other shutdown processes that may be impeding Db2 shutdown for periods of several minutes

I would suggest some kind of status message every 30 seconds, as well as more messaging indicating reached "milestones" in the shutdown process - i.e. bufferpools shut down, storage elements de-allocated, datasets closed, logging activities completed, etc

This would allow us to analyze Db2 shutdown issues without needing to directly involve IBM support, as well as predict "remaining time to shutdown" and make adjustments in our automation to accommodate a clean shutdown of Db2 on our own.
