Provide incremental progress messages through a DB2 group restart

During a recent DR activity our Db2 had issues during group recovery and it was challenging to determine at what point Db2 had gone as far as it could before requiring the other member to be restarted to resolve any locks RC00C200EB . The MSTR log was flooded with recovery messages resulting in delays in problem determination when time was critical in the recovery. Precious minutes were likely wasted... while it appeared as if DB2 was still performing necessary recovery. In this instance a WTOR and halt to the recovery could have possibly been useful to signify no further recovery was possible and that items were being left in GRECP status, making any further recovery attempts possibly fruitless?

There are other recovery situations where backout processing may be occurring and messages such as DSNR048I “csect-name UR BACKOUT PROCESSING LOG RECORD AT RBA rba1 TO RBA rba2” are issued periodically as backout processing is ongoing. In this case you just have the two RBAs to compare, and have to calculate and based on the rate of the LOG records being processed, how much time is left in the recovery. Better calculations for this type of backout recovery can be very useful .

Andreas, Thank you for submitting this enhancement request. Our Db2 for z/OS development team reviewed it and determined the first item has a very large impact across multiple component areas, making it unlikely to implement. However, the second item, to update the DSNR048I message, is under further review and it is likely there will be some improvements made to this message.

This Aha! idea will be updated as more information is provided from the Db2 for z/OS development team.
