Gather performance statistics for DB2 Stored procedures (of various types)

We have many thousands of stored procedures in several Datasharing groups. If we identify one that may be unused, before we remove it, we want to research and ensure that it is not used anywhere. We want to search a database for instances of this stored procedure to find the last time it was executed in order to be confident that it is obsolete. We also may wish to trend performance over time to identify processes that need to be reviewed for performance improvements.

Dear KC, Thank you for your response. The Db2 for z/OS development team reviewed it and would like you to be aware that even with SYSPACKAGE.LASTUSED, applications need to be exposed over time in order for Db2 to record usage.

We will reconsider this idea again at a later time.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. And we hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Team

Agreed that this meets our expectations regarding static calls. However, most of our calls would be dynamic, and as such, we dont have a good solution today.

You suggested that IBM could create a new trace and we could monitor the new trace and SYSPACKAGE.LASTUSED over time while exposing all applications. Exposing all applications is no small feat in our enterprise. Therefore, even this solution is not trivial. I would say that your proposal is better than nothing but far from ideal.

May I ask for some patience?

We have a lot of other projects going on, and we support more software than DB2. We need to ensure we are extracting this data and that it meets our needs before we can say that we are comfortable closing this idea.

    Thanks,
    KC

Dear KC, Thank you for submitting this enhancement request. Our apologies for the delayed response. Please be aware that our Db2 for z/OS development has review this idea and has provided the following feedback and question for you:

We are thinking that for static SQL, you can query the stored procedure dependency in SYSPACKDEP and monitor usage via SYSPACKAGE.LASTUSED. For dynamic SQL and static SQL which needs to go through incremental bind, we can consider writing a new trace record for object dependencies. You'd need to monitor the new trace and SYSPACKAGE.LASTUSED over time while exposing all applications, before confidently dropping the procedure. Is this an acceptable solution?

Stored procedures with SQL statements have packages in Db2 so you can use package accounting for performance statistics. At statement level, you can use IFCID 316 (if cached dynamic) or IFCID 401 (if static), just like any other SQL statistics in a regular application package.

Please let us know your thoughts.

    Kind regards,

    The Db2 for z/OS Team
